about

Hush is my third ambient soundscape composition (after Blankets & Bioluminescence and Scorpions & The Many Songs). The soundscape was recorded at night in a rice field in Bali (-8.339173, 115.168899). When I listen to natural soundscapes I find that I want to tread very lightly with the musical material. This piece is no exception. In fact this composition uses only six unique pitches on the piano, with entrances sparsely placed.

The piano entrances are deterministic and not improvised. The piano part follows the general contour of the soundscape recording and thus the large-scale timing of piano entrances is important. The accuracy of the timing should be such that each note is played within a second or two of its intended location. This level of accuracy allows the piano to follow the 'form' of the soundscape recording.
